You can ready about my complete smart home setup here. Synology DiskStation Manager already has a way to monitor the UPS status and initiate a shutdown when the battery is critically low. Home Assistant is my smart home hub and I try to monitor almost everything through it. My Ubiquiti Network gear and Synology NAS are not only critical for my smart home setup, but they are also some of the most expensive gadgets I have in my home.
NUT or Network UPS Toolsis a project that aims at supporting power devices such as Uninterruptible power supplies, power distribution units, automatic transfer switches, power supply units, and solar controllers.
It provides a way to control and monitor these devices using a uniform control and management interface, including an automatic shutdown of devices when the battery is running low. At this point, over different manufacturers and several thousand models are compatible with NUT.
NUT is open source and free to use. However, the options availabe through the DSM web interface are quite limited but sufficient for typical usageas you can see below. You can edit the NUT UPS configuration files using commandline and a lot more options become available via this method.
But we are not going to do much with commandline in this guide. Having said that, there is an easier way to accomplish this on HASS.
Synology UPS NUT
In this guide, we are going to do it the harder way, which is not really hard. Enable UPS support as shown in the picture above. You may choose to initiate shutdown after a set time or when battery is critically low.
This is entirely up to your preference. If UPS is connected properly and recognized by your NAS, you should see something similar to the screenshot below, when you click the Device Information button.
For this, you will have to allow access to portwhich is the default NUT port on all systems. Edit your Firewall profile rules, then create a new rule, and select UPS Server as the built-in application. This step is optional and requires some commandline work. But I recommend that you do this to make sure you do not have any headaches later on. If you prefer to check out the NUT configuration files in Synology, they are located here:.
If you make any changes to the configuration files, be sure to reload the UPS daemon using the following command:. Then check to see if NUT server is listening on port using the following command:. You should see an output like the one below that shows all the different IP addresses that can be used to access the NUT server using port Additionally, you can also use the following command to check the status of the UPS, including battery level, runtime remaining, etc.
Note that this only works for the default NUT configuration in Synology. If you changed any of the NUT configuration parameters, you will have to modify the above command appropriately, especially the name ups. If your Home Assistant runs on another system remote systemas in my case, then here is how you can test connectivity to your NUT server.
Install NUT client on the remote system using the following command:. The 5 resources listed above are the information I find useful in my case. You can add any or all of the resources listed in NUT sensor page. Then you may use one of the several lovelace UI cards to display these on your Home Assistant interface.
So what? While this is helpful for a quick check of what is going on in your setup, you may also setup automation. For example, I have the following three automation setup on my Home Assistant:. I am pretty you can do much more than this.
Sounds exciting?By volumeJune 23, in General Support. Then google Synology access UPS default login password. I can't remember the login password and in fact no any Synology at my network, btw do you success by setting as URL info. I did not change any of the usernames or passwords for my config, left everything as default. Thats really cool! I didn't know about these things either, just discovered them, small correction to my output above, the default password for monuser is secret:.

And what about the ESXi? Here we have the right solution. In the next step, download the NUT client installation file to the server. Before you install the client, think about whether you will be able to restart the ESXi? Restart is not mandatory, the client can run immediately. Advanced options introduced by the installer are visible in ESXi 5. If you can not restart ESXi, we need to set the appropriate options default directly in the file upsmon-install.
Of course nas. After entering the correct default options as root, install client sh upsmon-install. If you set the proper options in the file upsmon-install. All the necessary parameters can also be set from the vCenter Web client. At the end we can test on the ESXi console if everything is working properly by command upsc ups IP :. The nickname Bubbah is derived from a Japanese cartoon which central character is a bearcub named Bouba aka Bearcub Jacky. Excellent post - very informative! Question - when the power is restored after the Synology NAS has shut itself down, will the NAS power up again, or do you have to manually press the power button? If the Power Recovery function has been enabled in DSM, the system will restart automatically when power is restored. Hi Bubbah, Sorry for the noob question but what is this upsd.
You need a terminal emulator like putty to access it. I managed to read it. DO I need to edit anything in this upsd.
Just don't change anything to that file on the NAS but confirm that it matches the example in the "Quick Update" section of the article, so you can reflect that credential in your WinNUTS upsmon. Hi I can access my synology box with shh but I cannot access the upsd.
Just use the info in it. The upsd. Anybody else got this working? I've been setting this up today and I believe I've got it working. Need to do some final testing. Presumably it will only accept a connection from a authorised source. I have the shutdown method set to "Forced". Thanks for this mate! Powered by Blogger. Post Top Ad.ThanX a lot! Thanks for the info. After systemctl enable nut-monitor. On CentOS 7. I found the answer - Install from test repo.
Pretty much everything I expected to see in Synology Disk Station guide, thank you! Setting up a UPS that will automatically cause a Synology DiskStation to enter safe mode and CentOS 7 server was fairly straightforward, however there was not a lot of information showing how to do this so I decided to write this post.
Login to your DiskStation and go to the Control Panel. You should see something similar to the screen shown below. Once nut is installed you should have a nut user and group created by the installer.
We will need to update the configuration to allow it to listen for events from the Synology server. You will need to update or add a line that looks like the following:. Finally, run the following commands to enable the service to be run by systemctl. That's it! When you experience a power outage your UPS should kick on, communicate with your DiskStation to enter safe mode, and the DiskStation should communicate with the Linux server to halt it and when the power comes back up the DiskStation and Linux Server should automatically start back up.

Synology Network UPS (NUT) and ESXi 5.5
Could I ask a question? Would your package be able to act as a slave towards the Synology also? If so, what would be the settings in your package to accomplish this? I have done this with the NUT package.
Works like a charm:. Thats all there is. But don't forget that with a power failure your network doesn't have power too, so your switch must be connected to the UPS too that's what I forgot while testing :D. So I have told Synology pfSense is allowed as a slave. I created a user 'monuser' in Synology also, made him even admin there so he has sufficient rights, and explicitly added a firewall rule in the Synology to allow access from the UPS.
In NUT, I entered the settings per the screenshot attached.
I tinkered around a little bit with the type of UPS to see if it works, but it doesn't. So, I am not really sure how to get this working. Would anybody be willing to help me out of my misery ;D. Did you test your NUT ups settings first with the pfsense box directly connected with a usb cable to the ups?
You don't need a "monuser" on Synology. NUT recognizes it. Jan 8 upsmon: UPS [ups I don't use QOS, and the firewall is disabled in the Synology. It doesn't matter, it doesn't work. But there is something very strange going on:.
Today I set up Syslog server on the Synology, as I want to see what my switch is doing. I told my switch and pfSense to send the logs there. The switch happily does, but pfSense does not:. I would start by going through the firewall rules in detail.
